The Office of Continuing Medical Education of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, housed at Eastern Area Health Education Center, has been reaccredited by the ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education).

After an 18-month process, the Office of CME received notification of reaccreditation via email in mid-December 2018. The Office of CME is now accredited through November 2022.

“This is an awesome achievement, which occurred during a time of great change,” said Lorrie Basnight, associate dean of CME and executive director of Eastern AHEC. “The assessment period spanned staff turnover, new accreditation standards and processes, and moving the Office of CME to the new Eastern AHEC building in fall 2016. And we didn’t slow down; we were able to meet the standards while increasing our educational programming.”

Over the past three fiscal years, the Office of CME has increased the total number of CME credit hours offered from 1,502 to 1,734 to 2,499. The ACCME randomly selected 15 programs out of more than 600 eligible for review. Programs ranged from regularly scheduled series and grand rounds to the 30th Annual Recent Developments in Internal Medicine Conference in fall 2018 and the first-ever multidisciplinary Rural Health Symposium in fall 2017.

The Office of CME engages with a large variety of partners, planning committees, health systems, and regional coalitions to address complex health issues and expand educational and professional programming for physicians to improve health in eastern North Carolina.

“We’d like to thank all our regional partners; without them, our program would not be as strong as it is,” said Mildred Carraway, director of CME. “The ACCME recognizes us and our partners as change agents throughout the region.”

The Office of CME has been accredited since the founding of the Brody School of Medicine in the 1970s.
