SEAHEC Executive Director Dr. Joseph Pino was recognized as a 2019 Health Care Hero by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal.

The Health Care Hero awards are hosted annually to bring together the Wilmington-area medical community and its supporters. On their website, the Greater Wilmington Business Journal describes its goals to give members of the health community a chance to connect in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, celebrate individuals who go well beyond expectations to provide excellent care, and award scholarships to up-and-coming members of the health care community.

On November 15, health leaders convened for the 2019 ceremony at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington. Three finalists were recognized in 10 categories, with Dr. Pino taking home the award for Innovation. In addition to leading SEAHEC, Dr. Pino serves as the associate dean and campus director for UNC School of Medicine Wilmington campus, and as the vice president of graduate medical education at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC).

On the NHRMC website, Dr. Pino’s nominator was quoted as having admired his strong reputation in leadership and innovation in health care.

“This past year in particular, he helped create an innovative approach to develop the next generation of leaders across the healthcare community,” the nomination continued. “Ultimately, he helped shape the future of patient care.”

Dr. Pino’s nomination highlighted this co-founding of the Healthcare Provider Leadership program, which offers 30 high-potential providers—including physicians, health directors, and medical residents—with leadership training and development opportunities to strengthen patient care.
