Marilyn, an adjunct clinical instructor at Asheville-Buncombe Tech Allied Dental Clinic, has been attending continuing education courses at MAHEC since around the time she graduated in 1981. She used to occasionally travel out of the area to maintain her licensure credits, but she doesn't have to travel much anymore thanks to the quantity, quality, and variety of CPD courses provided through NC AHEC.

What We Do
In the rapidly changing health care industry, we meet the ever-evolving education and training needs of health professionals.
Our continuing professional development (CPD) programs are important resources that provide health care professionals with the training and continuing education they need to meet state licensure and specialty certification and to stay abreast of new research, emerging technologies, and the latest innovations and advancements in their fields.
We reach health care professionals in all 100 North Carolina counties with our regional and online CPD programs.
In 2017, more than 215,000 total participants attended more than 9,000 continuing professional development programs provided by NC AHEC.
We support a diverse range of CPD activities that encourage innovation and meet health professionals' licensing and certification requirements.
We offer a variety of ways for health care professionals to reinvest in their careers and remain life-long learners: grand rounds, preceptor development, certificate courses, refresher courses, workshops and conferences, skill development, information sharing, technical assistance and consultation, learning collaboratives, journal clubs, and more!
Our programs are often taught by health sciences faculty from the state’s five medical academic centers, bringing university expertise into North Carolina communities.
Through our statewide course calendar and nine regional Area Health Education Centers, we provide quality continuing professional development (CPD) programs designed to meet the education and training needs of health care providers in the allied health, dental health, medicine, mental health, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and emerging health professions. Our programs are often taught by health sciences faculty from the state’s five medical academic centers, bringing university expertise into North Carolina communities.
Strategic Initiatives
Our programs, courses, and events are constantly evolving to meet the specific needs of the various health professions and to meet the regional-specific needs throughout the state and to address the priority health issues of North Carolina. Continuing professional development priorities in 2018 include interprofessional practice education (IPE), opiate addiction, rural workforce development, behavioral health, and pay-for-value/practice transformation.

Continuing Professional Development
One of the ways NC AHEC pursues our mission is through the provision of quality continuing professional development (CPD) programs. Often known as continuing education (CE) or continuing medical education (CME), our CPD programs are designed to meet the education and training needs of health providers in the allied health, dental health, medicine, mental health, nursing, pharmacy, and public health professions.
Interprofessional education (IPE) programs are a major strategic emphasis. In a transforming health care workplace, interprofessional teamwork skills are increasing needed to meet the challenges of modern health systems.
